Cataract

Ophthalmologist Dr. Alan D. Gordon, M.D., offers diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, including cataract surgery and lens implant, at Center for Eye Care. Serving Lewistown, Klondyke, Burnham, Yeagertown, Fairview, Highland Park, Derry, Maitland, Shawnee, Hawstone and the surrounding area. Most people get some hardening and then clouding of their eyes naturally clear lens after they mature. This is first noticed at about age 40 when reading glasses are needed. This hardening and clouding may progress to become so dense that it interferes with vision and glasses don't make things any better. This is noticed by the need for brighter light when reading, by difficulty to see light contrast print, by the inability to see where the golf ball went, and by "discomfort" with driving after dark. When this cataract prevents people from doing what they want, it can be replaced with an intraocular lens.

Many people with cataracts may experience symptoms such as:

  • Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy vision
  • Difficulty in seeing to drive, especially at night
  • Trouble seeing to do close work
  • Problems watching television
  • Colors that seem dull, faded, not as bright
  • Frequent changes and a stronger glasses prescription
  • Haloes around lights
  • Bothersome glare

Serving Lewistown, Klondyke, Burnham, Yeagertown, Fairview, Highland Park, Derry, Maitland, Shawnee, Hawstone and the surrounding area.Modern cataract surgery corrects significant near- and far-sightedness without the need for hospital outpatient care and without the need of injections around the eye or patching the eye. If needed, it may be combined with surgery for astigmatism, glaucoma surgery or corneal transplant. Recently, multifocal lens implants have become available allowing for mush better correction of both distance and reading vision without glasses. Lens implants for astigmatism also are available (most insurances don't cover the extra cost of these "premium" implants). If you wish to have one of the newer lens implants, please discuss this with Dr. Gordon and notify us a week before the surgery – they must be specially ordered.

Cataract Lens Implants

Why chose us of your cataract/implant surgery?

  • We operate in our own state licensed, Medicare approved specialized center – not a general hospital – Medicare incentives granted to centers like ours mean discounts of hundreds of dollars for patients as compared to hospital care
  • Avoiding the hospital decreased your chance of hospital acquired infection
  • Unlike most local centers, we offer both premium lens implants and standard implants
  • We do the most modern procedures – shorter (about 10 minutes), safer and more comfortable procedures with quicker recoveries
  • We have equipment and staffing to manage most problems on-site
  • Unlike most hospitals, we use board certified anesthesiologists rather than nurse anesthesia
  • There is no need for patching afterwards or painful injections around the eye like at the local hospital
